Course Description
Introduces the new technician, and provides critical information for the experienced technician, on the theory and application of medium voltage cables. This includes a theoretical foundation on insulation science as it pertains to cable construction, termination and splicing of medium voltage cables including taping, heat shrink, cold shrink and elbows, and finally testing both with DC and VLF withstand and diagnostics.
This course is designed to provide the tools for an engineering technician or electrical worker to not simply learn one type of termination kit but to fully understand the technology of medium voltage cables, how to work with them, and how to evaluate their condition through testing. The course consists of five eight-hour days which include eight hours of insulation theory, twelve hours of cable termination training, eight hours of termination lab using both the 3M QTS and Elastimold separable connectors, and 12 hours of cable testing in the classroom and lab.
This course is anchored by an NCCER Level IV electrical module 26411, which is included for each trainee in the course. Upon successful completion, the trainee will be entered into the national registry and receive a certificate of completion for 35 contact hours equaling 3.5 CEU’s. This course requires 30 days advance planning due to the materials required.
Prerequisites: Proficiency in Basic and Advanced DC Theory and Basic AC Theory
